1. Extra Day to Cover Chapter 14/ Do lab if not done Friday
Tuesday: 3/25
1. Take the Quizstar: DOL 1
2. Online Assignment: Pasteur and Redi
3. FOSS Populations:
Big thought: What effect does bird predation have on the walkingstick population?
1. Click on “Walkingsticks Predation”
2. Click on “Eat Insects”
3. Choose “30 clicks”
4. Try to eat as many walkingsticks as you can by putting your pointer on a walkingstick and clicking. You only have 30 clicks.
5. When done, click on “see insects”. Then click on “Results”. Write down your statistics.
6. Click “close”. Select “Eat Insects” again and choose “30 Seconds”. You now have 30 seconds to eat as many walkingsticks as possible.
7. View results and record.
8. Answer these questions on your own paper, hand in.
Which color of walkingstick was easiest to find?
Which was hardest to find?
Why do you think that was the case?
Which color of walkingstick survived when there was a limit on feeding?
Why do you think that color survived the best?
Discuss does color affect the amount of walkingsticks eaten.
Every prey organism has ways to protect itself. Some have spines, some taste bad, and
some can escape quickly. These are all examples of adaptations organisms have to
protect themselves. Some walkingsticks blend into their surroundings, making them
difficult to see. This kind of adaptation is called protective coloration. Organisms that
blend in well are better adapted for survival in that environment than organisms that are a
different color.
Which walkingsticks were well adapted to survive in the bush environment?
Which were not well adapted for that environment?
If the surviving walkingsticks produced offspring, and birds continued to eat the
walkingsticks, what would happen to the populations of walkingsticks and predatory
birds in that bush environment?
